WHAT IF WIDELY ACCEPTED SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS TURN OUT TO BE FLAWED, OUTDATED, OR INCORRECT? BUT WE DON’T MAKE A BIG DEAL OUT OF IT?
AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC DOESN’T RECOGNIZE SUCH NONSENSE AND CONTINUES TO BELIEVE IN HALF-TRUTHS?
READ MORE BELOW ABOUT SOME SCIENTIFIC MISCONCEPTIONS THAT STILL HAUNT OUR MINDS AND SOMETIMES HAVE SIGNIFICANT SOCIAL IMPACTS
Do you, for example, still think that men impregnate women? An example of one of those memes that just sticks. Memes as the concept was originally intended, prior to the current meme craze circulating on the internet. The term originates from evolutionary biology. Coined in 1976 by Richard Dawkins as a cultural counterpart to a gene, a meme is an idea that spreads on its own and is subject to the principles of evolution as described by Darwin. Evolution of ideas: constant new mutations, survival of the fittest, survival and extinction. Just as in evolution, certain ideas or memes rise to the top, others disappear, some do very well, others fail to catch on and do not “survive.” A kind of “social selection” of urban legends, beliefs, scientific slogans, and so on.
