An Evolving Course<\/strong><\/p>\n

We began as a mineral.
\nWe emerged into plant life and into
\nthe animal state, and then to being human.<\/p>\n

And always we have forgotten our former states,
\nexcept in early spring,
\nwhen we dimly recall being green again.<\/p>\n

That is how a young person turns
\ntoward a teacher,
\nhow a baby leans
\ntoward the breast,
\nwithout knowing
\nthe secret of its desire,
\nyet turning instinctively.<\/p>\n

So humankind is being led along
\nan evolving course through this migration
\nof intelligences,
\nand though we seem
\nto be sleeping,
\nthere is an inner wakefulness
\nthat directs the dream.<\/p>\n

It will eventually startle us back
